In the years preceding World War Two, British gunmakers set a high standard for double rifles designed for big game hunting. While modern counterparts often struggle to match the craftsmanship of those bygone British innovators, Heym's 89B stands out as a notable exception. According to Heym's literature, the 89B is touted as the finest British double rifle crafted in Germany, and a closer inspection of the rifle validates this claim.

Unlike its predecessor, the 88B, renowned for reliability and accuracy, the 89B boasts a distinctly British appearance. Diverging from the conventional leaf springs used in British double rifle actions, the 89B employs coil springs, contributing to its robustness. Most of the action's working components are discreetly positioned behind what seems to be the action, and the removal of metal from the bar of the action is limited to two holes drilled from the front for the cocking levers.

What sets the 89B apart is its utilization of a Greener cross-bolt as a third fastener. This design choice, favored by many continental gunmakers, enhances the rifle's reliability. While slightly simpler to manufacture compared to other third-bite designs, the Greener cross-bolt effectively secures the action, contributing to the rifle's overall sturdiness.

The front trigger of the 89B is articulated to prevent the trigger finger from impact when the second barrel is fired. Standard features include Southgate-type ejectors, with the option for personalized touches such as engraving and color case hardening, tailored to individual tastes and budgets. To prevent accidental discharges, intercepting sears are a standard fit.

The safety catch on the 89B is manual, and its sighting arrangement includes a single standing wide-V leaf sight regulated for 50m, accompanied by a second folding leaf for 100m. Additionally, the rifle is pre-configured for the use of a red-dot reflex sight, adding to its practicality.

In terms of construction, the 89B's action locks up via twin Purdey under-bolts, and the Greener cross-bolt, positioned strategically, complements the overall design. The long water table, a characteristic feature inspired by vintage British rifles, contributes to the rifle's longevity by distributing the force generated during discharge over a larger area.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and relying on traditional hand-made craftsmanship, the Heym factory ensures impeccable workmanship. The stock design adheres to British traditions, featuring an open grip, a Holland & Holland-style 'pancake' cheekpiece, and drop-points behind the action. Heym offers a range of calibers, with customizable barrel lengths, showcasing a commitment to tailoring rifles to individual preferences.

In conclusion, the Heym 89B stands as a testament to timeless craftsmanship, embodying the essence of vintage British boxlock double rifles while integrating modern features for enhanced reliability and versatility.
