1. Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

2. Root 44 Park Run

If you’re keen for an early start on Saturday mornings, why not stretch your legs and challenge yourself at the local Root 44 Park run? This 5km trail takes you through beautiful vineyards and will make sure you start the day off right. Afterwards, treat yourself post-run to a well-deserved coffee or breakfast at the Root 44 market.

3. Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens

In between the daily outdoor activities, make a pitstop at the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden! The beautiful gardens boast a large and diverse array of plant species, both exotic and indigenous and is the oldest botanical garden in South Africa. As you walk through the gardens, you’ll pass relaxing water features, fresh greenery and divided sections, each with its own designated theme. The garden also allows visitors to stop for a refreshment and a quick bite to eat at the ‘Katjiepiering’ restaurant.

4. 4×4 Wine Experience

Next up on the itinerary, combine two of the most well-known outdoor activities of Stellenbosch – adventures and (of course) wine! The 4 x 4 vehicle adventure wine tour takes you off-road into the vineyards of Stellenbosch Winelands areas and includes sights, stories and the history of the area, all while enjoying the great outdoors.

5. Jan Marais Nature Reserve

The Jan Marais Nature Reserve is another perfect spot for nature-lovers. Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities that include mountain biking trails, hiking trails, picnic spots or bird watching, you’ll find it in the 23-hectare reserve.  Jan Marias Nature Reserve also has added features to cater for the whole family, such as labyrinths, jungle gyms and swings. The reserve boasts with various fynbos and the renosterveld of the Swartland as well as beautiful indigenous trees, perfect for escaping the city life. 

For the birdwatchers visiting the reserve, be sure to keep a lookout for many of the species that soar overhead and inhabit the reserve.
